Earlier this week I watched a speech by Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple and Pixar) given to students who were about to commence their university studies.

'You've got to find what you love...Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.'

This phrase has resonated with me ever since and I have to admit, it couldn't have come at a more appropriate point in my life.

Here's the challenge; knowing exactly what you love to do. Some people were lucky enough to discover what they loved early on. Others, and I include myself in this group, are still searching. It's not that I find it difficult to identify one thing that I love to do, the trick for me, of course, is selecting that one key love from many loves.

Confused? Let me re-phrase. When you have a wide variety of interests, how do you select just one to pursue? You don't. Try them all. You'll learn pretty early on which ones you want to stick at.

Two things about loving what you do

Engaging in smaller loves on a daily basis is the key to figuring out what you love on a much grander scale.

For example this morning I engaged in two things I love. Eating out for breakfast and blogging. So instead of doing them separately I did both together.  I even left my phone at home and rode to breakfast via a different route. Not exactly life-changing stuff but I had never eaten breakfast out by myself before and it was definitely a welcome change from my usual routine.

It's never too late to find what you love. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking and don't settle.

I don't care how old you are, how many years of study you have done or how stable your current job is. If you don't love what you do now, you're not going to love it in 1 year, 5 years or even 10 years. I'm not going to sugar coat it. Summoning the courage to make a change or start over will be difficult but I guarantee that when you do eventually find what what you love and in turn, love what you do, you'll never look back.
